3 Ways to Get an Amazing Landscape for Less.

An amazing landscape is one that is functional, cohesive, beautiful, low maintenance, safe, ecological and affordable. To get all that, you need a plan!

1) Have an Amazing Plan

It only takes two things to get the perfect landscape: 1) An awesome master plan and 2) Commitment. I can help with the first one and if we collaborate to create a design you love as much as your home, you’ll have no problem with the second.

A great plan goes a long way in saving you time, money, and work over the lifetime of your landscape design. Don’t do more work or spend more than you need to. Prevent bad purchases, bad plant placement, and installation mistakes that can cause problems immediately or down the road. Get a consultation with me and together we can create a landscape plan that works through all the details- the what, how, where, when, why, and who is all explianed and planned ahead.

2) Phase your plan over time

Phasing the installation of your plan over several years is one of the best ways to stretch your budget and get all the elements you want in a landscape, but only if you have a well thought out master plan. Phasing will create a more natural look with plants at different ages instead of having all the trees the same size. When you know where your final destination is for everything, you can do all the subterranean work early and prevent tearing up past installations as you work on the next phase. Finally, phasing allows some flexibility. As you use the areas you finish, perhaps you decide you want to adjust aspects of the plan to work better. You can still change your mind about parts of it. Just work with your designer ahead of time to see if they can consult later phases in the case of needing changes. The main drawback of this idea is that plants and materials will continue to inflate in price over time. But that’s life these days, so it is not really a reason to give up doing everything you want to if you don’t have the budget to do it all at once. Look for good deals and sales and plan interim phases to grow those plants now and transplant them again later when possible and applicable. Your designer can help you with that also.

3) Unconventional Sourcing of Materials

Reusing materials from a landscape revamp such as pavers. Collecting rocks from a site where you have permission to use them. Using materials from your own property like transplanted trees and rocks. You can find a local sawyer with a towable mill who will mill the usable logs on your property for a reasonable charge. Usually FB Marketplace or Craigslist will have listings for such services. Check the same sites for plant sharing opportunities. If you have friends or property that have plants already growing that you like, take a start or make a cutting. Plan to use trees you can transplant- smaller is better when trying that. Start plants from seed and start smaller to save money. Time is your money. Invest your time into creating your awesome plan and it will grow into something very valuable and enjoyable.
